PRIMERA PARADA: DOHA

Prefectura: Kagoshima, antigua provincia de Satsuma
Población: 606.000 hab. (ago 2010)

The year of death of the deceased is inscribed with the Christian year.
This Portuguese-style tombstone in semi-cylindrical shape is said to be the most beautiful of the Christian tombstones erected at the initial stage of missionary work. On the tombstone, splendidly inscribed with a large floral cross pattern and a small wedged-cross pattern, there is to be found Japanユs oldest epigraph written in romaji (Japanese transliterated into the Roman alphabet).

Oura Cathedral, built in the Gothic style, has been designated a national treasure in view of its special value as Japanユs oldest church. It is also a place of historic importance, being the site of the dramatic discovery of the hidden Christians; in the early afternoon of March 17, 1865, a group of people from Urakami came to the cathedral and professed their faith to Father Petitjean, thus revealing that Christian faith had survived over 250 years of harsh persecution under the anti-Christian edicts.

Site of the Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan
Nishizaka is said to resemble Golgotha, where Jesus Christ was crucified.
The incident called the "Martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan" began with the confiscation of the Spanish galleon San Felipe, which was cast up on the coast of Tosa (now Kochi Prefecture). By order ofToyotomi Hideyoshi, 26 Japanese and foreign Christians were crucified in Nagasaki. A total of 24 Christians, including Franciscan missionaries in Kyoto, laymen (including three children) and three Jesuits were arrested and had their ear lobes cut. They were dragged through the streets of Kyoto and then sent to Nagasaki. On the way to Nagasaki, two other Christians joined them. On February 5, 1597, the 26 Christians were martyred on Nishizaka hill. These martyrs were canonized in 1862. In 1962, to commemorate the centennial of the canonization, the above memorial relief was designed by Yasutake Funakoshi.

Urakami Cathedral

In 1925, the original Urakami Cathedral, a brick Romanesque church with twin towers, was completed on the former site of a village headユs residence where, in January of each year suspected Christians of Urakami had been ordered to trample Christian images underfoot, on the assumption that those who refused or hesitated thereby revealed themselves to be Christians. Urakami Cathedral was designed and constructed on the site by Father Fraineau, who was the rector. The cathedralユs construction was also supported by Urakami Christians. They had just returned to their devastated hometown from the “journey” they had been forced to make as a result of the so-called "Urakami Yonban Kuzure" (fourth Urakami falling) or the fourth persecution of Urakami Christians. To complete the cathedral, they contributed as much money as possible and worked hard to lay the bricks. Before its destruction, the cathedral was the largest Christian church in the Orient, and had taken 30 years of desperate efforts by Father Fraineau, who broke down from the overwork. The cathedral was destroyed by the atomic bomb dropped 20 years later. 13 years after the bombing, Urakami Cathedral was reconstructed by the faithful as a reinforced concrete building. In 1981, it was renovated on the occasion of the visit by Pope John Paul II.

Through the efforts of Fathers de Rotz and Raguet, some of the faithful emigrated from Shitsu and Kuroshima to cultivate the land of Tabira. These emigrants established Tabira Church, which was designed and constructed by Yosuke Tetsukawa, under the guidance of Father Tokichi Nakata. This splendid brick church, a multi-roofed building, has a bell tower with an octagonal domed roof at its front. The walls were built using bricks of two different colors, enhancing the churchユs appearance as viewed from Hirado Strait. Located beside the church is a cemetery where Christian ancestors were laid to rest, as if to watch over their descendants.

Hirado Island is the first place Christianity was introduced in Nagasaki by Francis Xavier. Since that time, believers have continued to preserve their faith. Hoki Church dates back to 1878, when the minka-mido (private house remodeled to serve as an oratory and place for missionary work) was set up in Kyozaki, east of the present churchユs location. In 1885, a provisional church was created. Around 1898, the present-day Hoki Church was constructed under the direction of Father Matala, who came to take charge of nearby Himosashi Church. The church building was constructed of red bricks and wood, with sacred images standing on pedestals placed in arches above the front entrance. The church is also characterized by the terrace beside it. This pretty church is situated against the backdrop of a beautiful natural environment.

Father Pelu came to Hirado Island in 1878, subsequently establishing a chapel in Tazaki, where he established the base for his missionary work. The chapel was the origin of Himosashi Church, a magnificent, white building standing in the Himosashi district, which is located roughly at the center of Hirado Island. The present church building was completed by Yosuke Tetsukawa in 1929. The church is a two-storied reinforced concrete structure with an octagonal domed bell tower. The churchユs interior features beautiful stained glass and a coved ceiling with floral patterns. For a time, Himosashi Church was said to be Japanユs largest church, after the destruction of the former Urakami Cathedral, once the largest church in the Orient. The white church furnishes an impressive contrast with the blue sky.
